How do I know if my parent needs home care?

Signs a parent in Calgary may need home care, and how to start a calm, respectful conversation.

Everyday warning signs

Small shifts often appear before a crisis. Your parent might skip bathing, wear the same clothes repeatedly, forget appointments, or leave the stove on. Unopened mail, spoiled food in the fridge, or a messy home can also signal that daily tasks are getting harder.

Mobility changes matter too: bruises from falls, fear of stairs, or staying in one chair all day are worth taking seriously.

Emotional and caregiver signs

Withdrawal from friends, low mood, or anxiety about being alone may mean companionship would help. If you are the primary caregiver and feel burned out, resentful, or unable to sleep, respite care can protect both you and your loved one.
